with the financial times, thanks so much for talking to us. >> ifill: next, to israel. president obama called prime minister benjamin netanyahu today to congratulate him on his victory in last week's parliamentary elections. the two leaders spoke about ensuring security in the region at a time of growing tensions. with their elections behind them, both men plan to address the civil war in syria, the threat posed by iran's nuclear program, and the stalemate between israelis and palestinians. and those are the subjects of three stories this week from margaret warner who is on a reporting trip to israel, the west bank and gaza. she begins tonight reporting on israeli concerns about the conflict in nearby syria. >> warner: the sweeping vistas of the golan heights plateau and the bucolic life of the israelis who live here bear quiet witness to the strategic importance of this area which israel captured from syria during the 1967 arab-israeli war. but after four decades of quiet along this border, israel, just like syria's arab neighbors, is increasingly worried about the unpredictable spillover from the

are concerned about the things that senator hagel has said about israel. ultimately down the line, democrats will wind up behind this nominee. it wouldn't look good for this president to pull out of this nomination for hagel to go down and democrats are mindful of that. i do think one of the things that's interesting about this pick, it's no one's happy, democrats aren't chairing this and republicans aren't chairing this. but he is certainly stirred the ire of both sides of the aisle and also ignored something that a lot of progressives and liberals were looking for this president to continue and that is a legacy of diversity with these top four picks, the big four of the cabinet being attorney general treasury secretary of defense, and secretary of state. and so far it looks like there's going to be less diversity, at least in some of the top picks. we'll have to look at how he fills out the rest of the cabinet going forward. >> we'll talk more about that in a second. i want to talk about john mccain. a lot of people were looking forward to exactly how he would come out and post on the issu

to the middle east and new tensions along the border between israel and syria. the "newshour" has confirmed reports that israeli war planes struck a convoy inside syria today. syrian officials have confirmed some details of those reports and disputed others. israel would not confirm or deny the strike. margaret warner has been reporting on the developments from jerusalem. i spoke with her a short while ago. margaret, it's good to see you. based on your reporting what can you tell us about this attack today? >> well gwen israeli officials are completely mum about this, but i've been able to confirm from a u.s. official that, in fact the attack took place that hit was a convoy of trucks carrying s.a.-17 antimissile components or the missiles themselves headed toward lebanon lebanon. the official i talked to said it actually occurred fairly near damascus but that the missiles or missile parts were already in hezbollah's hands. in other words that this was not a syrian army convoy taking the weapons to hezbollah, the militant shiite group in lebanon, but hezbollah already had possession of the

antiaircraft and weapons. and he said this is israel's warning to the president and his regime that they will not tolerate any weapons for israel's destruction. if this happened, it's certainly an escalation. and there's some degree of confusion around this. >> it is, and before we talk about this at all, we have to remember, we're dealing with one government, the israelis, that never admit some of this action that they carry out and we're dealing with another government, the syrians, who habitually lie. we have to look at all of this. two reports, the first that this convoy, carrying amount i aircraft weapons, was struck near damascus to beirut highway, near the border, and that seems to be the most reliable sources talking about that particular attack. and then the syrian state tv has announced that no, this was in fact an attack on a military research center in the suburb of damascus. that's what they're saying has happened. and the israelis as i said, not of confirming or denying any of this. but any expert you talk to, shep, will tell you this is about hezbollah in lebanon

that the senate seems to have a a serious conversation about these issues. >> israel has carried out a bombing inside syria, killing two people. the syrian government says israeli fighter jets entered syrian airspace at dawn on wednesday and launched strikes. the u.s. government has alleged that israel was hitting a convoy carrying weapons for hezbollah in lebanon, as serious as the target was in fact a scientific research site. in 2007, israeli warplanes bombed a military site in eastern syria. the attack comes amidst unrelenting violence in the fight between the regime of syrian president bashar al-assad and rebels seeking his ouster. but in a sign of potential diplomatic opening, the head of syria's main opposition group said wednesday he is prepared to hold talks with al-assad's representatives outside syria of the government releases tens of thousands of prisoners. his offer marked an apparent softening of a previously held position ruling out any talks with al-assad. speaking during a visit to kuwait, the u.n. secretary general ban ki-moon urged both sides to stop the fighting in syria.
